Snowy Owls attract Bird Paparazzi in Boundary Bay, B.C,
There had been a lot of publicity around the arrival and viewing of the Snowy Owls in Boundary Bay so I thought I would check it out for myself.
I took highway 99 to Ladner Trunk Road and turned left onto 72 Ave. I followed the signs to Boundary Bay Airport and just kept going to the end of the road. It is a dead end street and I found some parking. I was surprised at the amount of people visiting the dyke to view the birds. Once on the dyke I didn't have to walk very far to see the beautiful mainly white birds of prey. They were in a group by not very close together. Snowy Owls are about 60 cm in height, the size of a ShizTsu. They eat lemmings in the Artic and are wintering in Boundary Bay to be close to a food source. While here they hunt mostly in the evening or early morning and rest during the day. At times they may eat other water fowl or smaller owls, mice, voles, moles, rats and rabbits.
I counted fifteen in total along the logs close to the dyke but there have been counts of up to twenty in some areas and more in Roberts Bank. There were dozens of photographers, some with lenses weighing up to thirty pounds perched on the Dyke. Others were just curious that made the trip to see the birds for themselves.
The Bird Watching code of conduct implies you are not to approach the birds or wander off the Dyke and it is best to bring a scope, binoculars or a telephoto lens for the best viewing. Most wildlife photographers with the humongous lenses will gladly let you have a peek through their cameras trained on the birds. They are waiting for the bird to spread their wings or take flight. It is their money shot.
It was a sunny morning after several days of grey skies and heavy rain and the birds were sunning themselves. Their large heads were facing the sun and would swivel around at the sound of children calling out or a bicycle passing by.
Despite the large crowd of people, it was remarkably quiet.
I felt a sense of awe, since I've never seen such beautiful and rare birds before.
We are so lucky to live in an area rich in wildlife and beauty. There were other birds non nonplussed by the attention. Several Great Blue Herons picked their way through the marsh and a Red Tailed Hawk drifted over the near by farm land.
Dozens of Bald Eagles stood knee deep in the mud with seagulls in flooded fields and mallards snoozed in the marsh grass.
Mute Swans, Trumpeter Swans, Snow Geese and Canada Geese were spotted in water soaked fields along highway #10 and Ladner Trunk Road.
I watched "The Big Year" last week and discovered Birding is a popular hobby. There are over three hundred species of birds found around Boundary Bay, Delta, White Rock and Ladner. Nature Guide B.C. has a list of birds spotted in the area here.

New TV Pilots to be filmed in Vancouver
Here is a quick run down on the five new pilots filming in Vancouver from mid-March to April.
The CW is hoping to have a "Cult" hit on its hands soon.
The network has ordered a pilot for a new drama called "Cult," from "Gossip Girl" executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and "Hart of Dixie" executive producer Len Goldstein. Schwartz, Savage and Goldstein will executive-produce, as will "V" writer Rockne O'Bannon, who will pen the pilot.The pilot will center on a female production assistant on a television series titled "Cult." She teams with a journalist to investigate fans of the series, whom she suspects of committing copycat crimes that they've seen on the show.
"Cult" comes via Warner Bros. TV, as well as Fake Empire, Schwartz and Savage's production company.
Green Arrow Pilot
Katie Cassidy is returning to The CW.
The Melrose Place and Supernatural actress will be playing the female lead, Dinah “Laurel” Lance, in the network’s upcoming adaptation of the DC Comics series Green Arrow, which is titled simply Arrow.
Laurel is an old girlfriend from Oliver Queen’s past, who dated him before the incident that left him missing for five years. The two of them share a past and a tragedy that involves Laurel’s sister. Now, she helps people with a legal-type group called CNRI.
The role of Dinah Lance, the Black Canary, was played in the 1970′s Legends Of The Superheroes Roasts as someone known only as “Danuta.” On Birds of Prey, a character named “Dinah” was played by Rachel Skarsten but the Black Canary was actually her mother, portrayed by Lori Loughlin. More recently, Alaina Huffman made multiple appearances as the Black Canary in a handful of episodes of The CW’s Smallville. The character herself first appeared in DC Comics 70 years ago.

GreenArrowTV has just gotten word that Arrow will indeed be shooting in Vancouver, British Columbia, with the current production dates listed as March 12-April 2. Needless to say, we’ll be getting more casting news before that time comes.
More interestingly, Arrow’s production offices appear to be housed at the same Burnaby location that served as “home” to Smallville for ten years.
Could they be set up at the same studio? It’s possible, though we don’t have confirmation or denial of that either way. Additionally, shooting a pilot in Vancouver does not necessarily imply that the show will stay there if it goes to series. It’s a safe bet that the show may stay up north, though, considering the variations of locale and scenery that one can find in British Columbia.
Beauty and the Beast Pilot
Smallville star Kristin Kreuk is back at the CW in one of the most talked-about roles this pilot season: the female lead in the CW’s drama pilot Beauty And The Beast. Loosely based on the 1980s CBS series starring Linda Hamilton, CW’sBeauty And The Beast is described as a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist.
It centers on Catherine (Kreuk), a tough-minded NYPD homicide detective haunted by witnessing her mother’s murder nine years ago and the killers’ quick demise at the hands of a Beast. After years of searching, Catherine finally finds the Beast, Vincent Koslow, the survivor of a military experiment that went disastrously wrong, and becomes the protector of his secret life as a superhero. Gary Fleder is directing the pilot, written by Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper. Levin and Cooper are executive producing with the creator of the original series, Ron Koslow, the original series’ producers Paul Junger Witt & C. Anthony Thomas, as well as Bill Haber. Canadian-born Kreuk, who played Lana Lang on the young Superman series Smallville, fielded interest from multiple pilots this season, including ABC’s Beauty And The Beast pilot executive produced by Fleder. Her post-Smallville series credits include an arc on Chuck. Kreuk is repped by Gersh and her longtime Canadian agent Russ Mortensen.
EW has confirmed that Kristin Kreuk, a.k.a. Smallville‘s Lana Lang, has been cast in The CW pilot Beauty and the Beast. The show, inspired by the late ’80s Linda Hamilton-Ron Perlman series of the same name, will follow New York homicide detective Catherine (Kreuk) who discovers an unlikely ally in Vincent, a military vet turned into a beast by an experiment gone wrong. Forced underground by his appearance, the Beast acts as an avenging angel — including killing the man who murdered Catherine’s mother nine years before.
Ron Koslow, who created the original series, will return as Executive Producer alongside producers Paul Junger Witt, C. Anthony Thomas, Bill Haber, and new producers (and pilot scribes) Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper. The CW’s reboot will face off against anotherBeast pilot ordered by ABC last month. Gary Fleder, who is directing The CW’s pilot, will also executive produce ABC’s take on the “tale as old as time.”

I caught up with Joe Lando on the set of The Secret Circle on Tuesday Feb 13. He was working on a scene in front of the house used as Cassie Blake's residence in Chance Harbor also known as New Westminster.
Joe was working on the scene where he walks along the sidewalk among a couple of dozen dead crows.
He walks along the sidewalk, up the walk and up to the front door.
Cassie and Adam come out onto the porch and look at all the dead crows. The discuss a curse or spell.
Joe seemed like a really nice person. A neighbor was talking to him while he was rehearsing his lines and he took the time to speak with her.
He chatted with the other crew members and walked around while the crew was changing up the shot.

Joe Lando has signed up to appear in The Secret Circle.
Lando has landed the role of Cassie's mysterious father John Blackwell, TV Guide reports.
Blackwell, who has been referred to several times in the series, will return to Chance Harbor in an attempt to help out Cassie (Britt Robertson) and the rest of the Circle.
The character, who claims that he has changed, is described as "powerful" and "enigmatic", but he is also thought to have a number of enemies.
Lando, who will make his Secret Circle debut in the 15th episode of the season, has previously appeared in shows such as Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Higher Ground, Wildfire and Melrose Place."
