Good-bye 2009 and hello 2010

Another decade, another ten years, another year and here we are on the eve of 2010.
Remember when we used to party like it was 1999? Can you even recall what you were doing on the eve of Y2K? I was living in Calgary, my children were small and I was still married. We lived in our first house in Calgary, a very nice small three bedroom, two bath with a finished basement across the street from a Catholic School and the beautiful Sundance Park.
I was working for Banff Mount Norquay Ski Resort and we were all into skiing and very happy.
Business people feared a Y2K melt down and everyone was trying to get money out of the ATM before all the world's computers crashed and the world was put into chaos and WW3.

I was probably twenty pounds lighter, a lot more fun and still married.

Wow, have things changed in ten years.

I am no longer married, no longer living in Calgary, no longer a marketing coordinator and with great sadness and regret, I don't ski much either. My kids are big, attend public school and I moved back to Cloverdale.
I went back to school, (yet again) made a few commercials, learned how to be a ENG Camera operator, a professional photographer, a Tour Operator and discovered the joy of operating a unique Tour Business.
I interned at CTV Television & Global Television, freelanced for Vancouver's biggest newspapers, ticked off four Caribbean Islands off my bucket list. I worked on several expensive renovations to my current house and became a land baron by purchasing some beautiful view property in the sunny Okanagan.

I along with the rest of the world discovered Face Book, You Tube, Twitter and Blogging. We learned about PS3, XBOX, email, texting, sexting, blackberries, iphones, ipods, itunes, and video recorders that are so small they can be hidden in the palm of your hand.
We as a country became involved in another war, welcomed a Black President of the United States and saw a few Prime Ministers come and go out of 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa.

In 2009, the recession hit the newspaper and television industry and several papers around the world shut their doors. Several television stations had to close as well and it seems that cable stations are the only ones making any money. The Internet has forever changed the way we receive the news.

I enjoyed a trip to Toronto in the spring and met people at the Newspapers Photographers Association of Canada. I love Toronto in the spring but I am really glad I am a West Coaster.

Then in the spring of 2009, Twilight New Moon came to Vancouver. It had a huge fan base. A fan base that was bigger and stronger in numbers than anything I or the world for that matter have ever seen before in any type of book and movie production. I have to admit, Harry Potter is a series I adore and can watch over and over again but the Twilight Saga is so completely different.

I quickly had to catch up so I read all four books of the Twilight Saga in one week.
I had Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse and had to run to Costco to purchase Breaking Dawn. I enjoyed the books so much I had to keep reading them until they were finished.

Unfortunately in 2009 and being involved in the Saga, I had the very bad luck of being a victim of cyber bullying by pitiful photographer who hates anyone who he seems as a threat in Vancouver. His associate is a bitchy Vancouver based gossip blogger and a I was threatened by two drunken skanks at a Sam Bradley Concert. I felt compelled to report all incidents to the police and in the event there were further problems, the police would have a record of who was harassing me. All of this because I am a photo journalist and was reporting on the Twilight Saga.

I had the unfortunate experience of meeting a girl named B B who with the help and encouragement of her equally slimy father, tried to first rob me and then extort money from me. Luckily for me, justice prevailed and I won my first small claims court claim.
My advice, trust no one.

Also in 2009 I have realized my children are now in high school, I live in a nicely renovated house in Cloverdale, and last year our hamster, bird and beloved cat, "Baby Cat" died.

The best part of 2009 was The Twilight Saga. I followed the production of New Moon religiously and reported everything Twilight. I then had the genius idea to start a Tour company and take fans to all the location used in the making of New Moon.
After a few months I learned that Summit Entertainment did not want me doing the tours and asked me to stop using all the Twilight names, photos, intellectual property of Twilight so I complied. I am not one to cause trouble or be defiant.

My company is now called On Location Tours Vancouver and it is a book club that gets together and goes sight seeing. www.onlocationtoursvancouver.com

I spent the summer meeting the most interesting and fun seeking fans of the books. We discussed at length everything about the making of New Moon and the characters of the New Moon book.
Meeting the Twi Fans was the best part of 2009 for me. I met people from all over the world. Young women, older women, dads, boyfriends, husbands, grand-pa's wives, girlfriends, moms, daughter, cousins, doctors, lawyers and everyone in between all contacted me and asked me to show them the sights of Vancouver.
It was great.

Then I was asked by several news outlets to assist them in the making of their New Moon News Specials. I loved being the New Moon and Eclipse Expert in Vancouver.
I have kept a journal on each and every New Moon and Eclipse filming location throughout the productions. I loved working with the camera crews of E! News and MTV and German Television. I toured journalists from international newspapers and interviewed with local broadcast and newspaper journalists.
I was the Twilight Vancouver Film Production Tourism Ambassador.

My celebrity reporting was steady and I was having a blast and despite the evil people who crossed my path, it was a great year. I leaned a lot of lessons, paid out way too much money in legal fees, and found out who are good friends and who are scum of the earth.

I hope for more in 2010. I hope for Peace around the Globe, Peace in our city and a great run at the Winter Olympics. I hope the mean people find a way to be nice and I hope the troubled people find peace in their hearts.
I hope my children remain happy and healthy and that I continue on a successful path.
I would like to find love again and a steady income but if it is meant to be, it will be.
Happy New Year Friends and thanks for reading.

Hillwood Twilight Parody, Very Good by the way.

The Red Olympic Winter Mittens.

The theme of the photos is Red Winter Olympic Mittens. The Red Olympic Mittens are a national treasure and a symbol of Canadian Kitch. The Red represents a colour in our Canadian Flag and the mittens is an iconic image of the Great White North.
These knit mittens have become a symbol of The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games that are now less than 50 days away.
The mittens sold for $10.00 at Bay and Zellers stores across Canada but many stores sold out less than a few days after they were released. They are a fund raiser for our National Sports teams. A easy and fun way Canadians could participate in supporting the Winter Games and athletes, one pair of mitts at a time.

The Red Mitten Craze was the Christmas item to give and receive this year. It got so crazy that while I was at the Bay in Willowbrook Mall in Langley, one woman purchased 200 pair of mittens herself.
I had no idea what she was going to do with them but my best guess was she was going to give them to students or something along those lines.
I was lucky enough to have the foresight to pick up one pair for every member in my family. This was in November when they hit the stores.

While others scrambled and searched high and low for the now elusive mitts, I wore mine proudly around the town.
People would post on their Twitter, "Red Mitts at the Bay Downtown Right Now" to help out fellow Red Mitten hunters.

The Red Mitten wearers are a proud bunch, honoring our Canadian Heritage and showing off our support of our Canadian Olympic Teams in the process. The mitts are also part of the Torch Bearers uniform, a pop of red against the white uniform and the hand that proudly hoists the flaming torch into the sky in cities and towns across Canada.

As I passed other Red Mitten wearers, we exchanged a knowing glance, one filled with pride of ownership and satisfaction we were the lucky ones that had the elusive and most desired Red Mittens.

Merry Christmas 2009

Another Christmas for the books. I really out did myself with the Turkey Feast this year. Not to brag too much but everything worked out perfectly. Having the ex here all day was great. I was able to take a really nice walk in the sunshine once the Turkey was in the oven and then grab a Christmas Day nap.
When I awoke, I ran to the kitchen to check on the progress. My mom and the ex had things under control but I realized I had arrived just in time. The potatoes were about to boil dry and the ex was not making the gravy the "right way". He made me a little anxious and the tension built. I needed a glass of wine stat.

My mom wisely left the kitchen and let me take control again. I had pre-made the delicious cranberry & orange sauce, the biscuits were going into the oven, the beautiful Turkey was out and resting and the garlic mashed potatoes were in the mix master.
My daughter had arrived just in time to whisk the cheese sauce and the last thing I had to do was make the lid for the Apple Betty Social dessert.

It all came together, the gravy, Turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, cheese sauce, vegetables, biscuits, sweet potato, wine and dressing.

The table was set with my Grandmother's china, wine glasses and my own special occasion flat ware.

My sister finally showed up at 5 pm with loads of gifts just as the food was being put on the table. I was not going to wait. She was over an hour late and everyone was starving.

The ex gave up his seat at the head of the table to my son who is now the man of the house so it was only fitting that he gets to sit at the head of the table.
Everything was wonderful. I drank my wine, settled down and enjoyed one of the best Turkey Dinners I have ever created.

It was a very nice Christmas at our house. I received some lovely gifts, (even from the ex) and I had my family. My children were very happy with the gifts they received as well. We received long distance calls from our relatives in the east and wished them a Merry Christmas.
This year was the first year my mom, my son and the ex didn't spend the day serving others at the church in White Rock. There were more than enough hands this year and they were not needed. My son was disappointed but I let him know there are other volunteer opportunities to help others in need.

Today I counted my blessings.

The Thing about Blogging.....

T'was the night before Christmas.....

I watched Julie and Julia tonight with my mom. It was long but I liked the movie. I love Meryl Street. She is one of my favorite actresses. She played a woman who was a giant and it was great to see how they made her look so tall. She made Julia Child seem like such a wonderful woman. I enjoyed the Julie part as well. The story line about blogging. I found it very interesting the movie was set in 2002 and 2003 and blogging was just catching on then.

My two kids are with their dad as per our agreement. He gets the kids on Christmas Eve and they all come over in the morning. Christmas's are changing every year. We always say we should head south and skip Christmas but it never seems to work out.

Here is it, Christmas Eve 2009. Another year has passed and I've learned the older you get the faster time flies. Last year we had a ton of snow. I was out in my neighborhood with my camera taking photographs and planning the huge feast for Christmas Day. Christmas came and went and 2009 was upon us. I spent a lot more time blogging and as I soon discovered from watching the movie, the thing about Blogging is that people read the blogs. Once you press the Publish Post button, the blog is on the net and people read your posts.
Same thing with Twitter. Twitter burst onto the net in 2009 and since I started tweeting last spring, I have over 4,000 tweets. Wow, that is a lot of tweets.

Now, I am not saying I am a great writer or a famous blogger and I don't blog about everything or anything in particular and I don't really have a theme but I did start this blogspot a few years ago. I am happy people even subscribe to my blog. (Thank you subscribers)

The upside to blogging is people do read blog posts and people do judge and form opinions. People think they know you by reading your blog and looking at photos and getting into your life. I think a blog is a slice of private life, a tidbit of showing your personality. It is an opportunity for the writer to express their thoughts on subjects in a few paragraphs.

A blog, (in my opinion), is a public place for personal opinions and thoughts that want to be shared. Once the blog is published, the writer is sharing that opinion. I am like a columnist without a paper.

The downside to blogs is that once the post is out there, anyone can read the blog and anyone can save the blog, take your words, take your photos, take your ideas, take your identity and take away your desire to blog.

There was a moment in the movie when the character Julie realizes she is writing for an audience and feels some panic. She wants to please her readers because she sees herself as a writer.
I see my self as a blogger trying to become a better writer.

I have also found there is fierce competition between bloggers. Some blogs are very similar to each other and themes are very similar. I have found a few bloggers wait for me to make a post about some news and they take my information, make a few adjustments, sometimes change the photo and presto, put their own name on the post and call it their news. I am sure some theme bloggers feel the same way about other people as well. I have even found some of my photographs submitted to blogsites from individuals who took them right off my site and said they were their own.

I often post second hand news on my site but I just cut and past the whole thing from the source and give credit where and when credit is due. Sometimes I use the share button and share the link.
Photos on the web are a very tricky and touchy subject.
There are sites that you can download photos for free. It is copyright free photos dot com. I would also save a photo from a site and give credit to the maker if the credit is shown. If there is no credit shown, then I can't give the credit. If a photo is on a site such as People.com, the photo has been paid for by the host. Once it is out on the net, there is a share button on the page and that photo is available for people to link it to their site or blog. I try to ensure the credit is on the photo. I always appreciate it when people ask me for my photos.
Seventeen Magazine emailed me and asked me to donate some of my photos for their magazine. I declined because they are a for profit magazine with money and a budget and they wouldn't ask a photographer or a writer to donate their talent so I declined.
Other non profit agencies have asked for use of a photo and I have agreed.

There were times when I posted too much news and found my stories in popular magazines. Some editors emailed me and wanted to know if I wanted to become a regular contributor. I declined the offers. Then I had to make my blog posts very vanilla. Some of my fans questioned why I was posting so little detail and I had to say it was because I was posting too many details and other people were doing their reporting off my blogspot. It conflicted with my own reporting job.

Now, there are some crazy bloggers who are just plain psychotic and think they are the only bloggers that know anything about everything and go out of their way to police other people's blogs.
It makes me sad. I don't feel like blogging when things like that happen. It makes me pause and wonder what I can do about it and realize there isn't much I can do so I just continue on.

We are on the Eve of another New Year and I don't know what it will bring. The career I wanted so much seems to be drifting further and further away. It is like watching the oars of your rowboat drift away and you struggle like mad to get to the oars but you can't quite reach them.

I have recently felt the subtle but distinct sting of sex and age discrimination. I am younger than George Clooney and Brad Pitt for gosh sakes. The employers would vehemently deny it but I know I was passed over for several positions not because of my skill set, extensive education, list of credentials or job history but because of my age and sex.
The business of photography and broadcasting is a man's world and dominated by men who want to be with other men. It is an ancient old boys club and a man's network and extremely difficult if not impossible to break into.

I don't consider myself old. I don't feel old, I feel like I am thirty. I am fit, ambitious, clever, witty, creative, smart, savvy, articulate, sexy, idealist and strong. I am a great date, a good friend, a thoughtful, caring and compassionate mother and I was a wonderful wife.
I am a competent Camera Operator, Photographer, Editor and business owner.

It makes me feel sad and mad at the same time. Most of the time I am frustrated. I want my career of choice. I want to do what I want to do and I don't want some narrow minded, sexist, prejudicial man to prevent me from reaching my goals.

I will continue on with my goals and I will not give up on my dreams. To give up would mean defeat and I will not be defeated. I hope 2010 is my year.
I wish the best to my readers in 2010 as well and no matter what road blocks you face in your life, stay on a steady course and keep your goals and dreams in view.
Thanks for reading.

From Dose.ca - Interview with A Volturi - Canadian Actor Christopher Heyerdahl

Christopher Heyerdahl knows from fanatics. Up ‘til now, the Canadian actor has bulked up his Imdb credits with work on cult sci-fi series the likes of Supernatural, Stargate: Atlantis, Smallville and the recently Gemini-honoured Sanctuary. But with his latest role -- that of the millennia-old, heartsick Volturi vampire, Marcus -- in the upcoming New Moon, Heyerdahl’s been introduced to a whole new breed of fangirl: the Twihard.

by Dose.ca (Calgary Herald)

Before New Moon causes mass “dazzling” and hysteria in theatres Nov. 20, Heyerdahl talked to Dose.ca about the key difference between a Twi-hard and your garden variety sci-fi fanatic, how Marcus’ vampire superpowers (he’s an empath) would have come in handy on the New Moon set and how it was that a Twilight fan convinced him to take the role.

--

Congratulations on your Gemini nomination for Sanctuary. It seems as though you’ve been involved in a lot of sci-fi shows with very fanatic fan bases.

(Laugh) Passionate is what I call them.

How do you find Twilight fans differ from the typical sci-fi fanatic? What makes them special?

Well, so far -- and I say so far because I have a feeling that after New Moon the demographic is going to change dramatically. I think that guys are going to be able to accept it without losing face.

Ah, you’re referring to the action scenes?

Yeah, absolutely. It’s pretty sexy, masculine stuff, I tell ya’, with the Volturi coming in, and the Wolf Pack. But so far it’s basically a female fanbase and I think that women allow themselves to admit to the world -- guys have a harder problem, though I think not so deep down we’re just as into it as anybody else -- that whole idea of very dangerous, sensual, animalistic, pure, everlasting love. It seems to be young women and their mothers. Twi-moms have invaded the scene! It’s been a lot of fun -- and there’s been an interesting amount of crossover. There’ve been a lot of people who’ve come down to talk to me [at sci-fi conventions], you know, sci-fi fans, and they know me from these other things I’ve done and also are extremely passionate about Twilight, so there seems to be some crossover there as well.

What are some of the more memorable fan encounters you’ve seen working on New Moon?

(Laugh) There was a girl in Chicago. I did an appearance in Chicago and there was a young girl there, it was very sweet. Literally every time she saw one of us she couldn’t speak. She’d sit there with this smile on her face and you’d see slowly she’d start to tremble, and then she would start to giggle, and then she would start to jump up and down, and she just giggled and jumped. That’s all she did.

She was about 15. She was a very, very sweet young girl. It was very funny. She could not speak. Cameron Bright [who plays Alec, another member of the Volturi] was there, and she’d just go ‘He’s s-o-o-o c-u-u-ute.’

So she wasn’t totally mute, then.

Well, she could only say something about someone who wasn’t there. If she was in their presence, I’d be like, ‘He’s right there, go talk to him, he’s a nice guy.’ ‘Oh no, he’s so c-u-u-ute.’ So it’s very sweet, very sweet.

I read you took the part because you know someone who’s a big fan, your niece. Is that true?

Yesss. She’s a big fan.

What was her reaction when she learned you’d be playing Marcus?

She was pretty excited, but she basically said, ‘Well, OK, but I don’t like Marcus.’

And I said, ‘Well, why don’t you like Marcus?’

‘He’s evil.’

I say, ‘What do you mean he’s evil? [*Total Twilight series spoiler!*] He saves Bella, he saves Renesmee, what’s the deal? He comes in and he saves the day all the time.’

She pauses, then says, ‘Well, he eats people.’

(Laugh) So there you go, you have to be a vegetarian to get the thumbs up from my niece.

What sort of insider gossip were you able to sneak her from the set?

(Laugh) True to form I gave her nothing at all! Nothing but the spin, baby. What happens on set pretty much stays on set, except for when Jamie Campbell Bower [who plays Volturi elder, Caius] gets dressed up in his geisha uniform and runs from bubble bath to bubble bath. Other than that I can’t say anything. Omigod, did I say that?

Now that the film’s almost in theatres, does she get anything else than the bragging rights that her uncle’s in the movie? Did you bring her any souvenirs from the set?

I wish I had, actually. I’m not an autograph seeker, and I have a thing for really honouring the set as a workplace, so what happens on the set stays on the set and it’s a place of work and concentration. It’s the inner sanctum. There’s so much craziness around this film that it’s best to leave all that fandom outside.

How would you describe the atmosphere on set?

The interiors were shot in Vancouver. … It was very serious. Very, very serious and very difficult set to work on. No, it was an absolute hoot. We were very intent on honouring the world that Stephenie [Meyer, Twilight’s author] created. We were very conscious. The fans have read these books, they know what’s in store for them. The lucky people like us who get to incarnate these characters, it’s a huge responsibility and one that everyone took very seriously, and the opportunity to work with Chris Weitz, who created this amazing set for everyone to work on, where everyone felt ready to take chances and be vulnerable and experiment and play and throw out ideas and -- it’s a great creative atmosphere.

Going off the action scenes we’ve seen from New Moon so far, it seems that the Volturi are far more smash-em-up than they seem in the book. Marcus has a rep as being the most apathetic of the Volturi, but in this movie adaptation, do things change so that even he is getting in on the stunts?

Well, I tell ya: I was always jumping up because I wanted to dive on Edward [Robert Pattinson] as well, and throw him around. But for some reason, Chris [Weitz, the director] just kept saying: ‘No, just stay in your seat, just stay in your seat, be more apathetic.’ It was very difficult, Marcus always wants to get in on the action. As soon as you wake the guy up -- as soon as Edward and Bella walk in -- he gets so excited seeing this beautiful young love, it reminds him of the old days with Didyme, his long-lost love, it’s pretty hard to keep that man down, now. He’s finally woken up after 2,000 years.

Marcus’ superpower is that he’s empathetic to relationships, right?

(Laugh) Yeah, his superpower is being empathetic. He has an amazing empathy and he’s able to see the connections between people. … He’s the one who’s able to see when allegiances are starting to wane, he’s the one who’s able to nip it in the bud. So we take care of problems before they become problems.

If you had that superpower in real life, how might it have come in handy on the New Moon set?

If I actually had it in real life I would know when Jamie Campbell Bower was going to be coming around the corner at any one time, knowing that he was going to be attacking me.

That’s the second time you’ve brought him up. Was he seriously a big prankster on set?

Huge prankster. He’s a very naughty, naughty, naughty young man.

Anything he actually did that you can tell me about?

You know what, I can’t tell you the truth. I can only tell you lies! (Laugh.) He’s a very naughty boy. I don’t think you could print the terrible things that he did on set. (Laugh.) That’s all I’m going to say. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination, it’s far more interesting.

Marcus plays an important role in the final chapter of the series, so I’m assuming you’re going to be back.

I certainly hope so. Marcus will be back, but you never know. I’m still waiting for the call and then until I see a piece of paper who knows.

You haven’t signed for the fourth movie, Breaking Dawn, yet?

No, we’re all waiting with bated breath.

Robpattznews interviews Samueltwit1

My Twitter friend, Robpattznews, caught up with this young and talented singer, Sam Bradley. He has been a friend of Marcus Foster and Rob Pattinson for many years.
He is wonderful in concert and I have been to two of his concerts in Vancouver. I have several video's of his performance on my own youtube account, (Newsflic). Have a watch as Robpattznews interviews Sam Bradley.
